THE GOVERNMENT OF ONTARIO created the Ontario Francophonie Awards in 2006. This award is a special recognition program that honours citizens who have made progress possible and played a key role in fostering a stronger Francophone community in Ontario. Awarded every two years during International Francophonie Week, the Ontario Francophonie Awards honour Francophones and those who are not Francophone but promote the French language and culture (Francophiles). The award recognizes those who have recently made an outstanding contribution to the political, social, economic and cultural vitality and well-being of Ontario's Francophone community.

This year, the Ontario government created a Youth Francophonie Award linked to the Government's "Accent on Youth" strategy which aims to encourage Ontario's Francophone youth to speak French and to become actively involved in the development of their communities. Now, every two years, the Ontario government will award three separate prizes to:

The Youth Award will highlight the exceptional contribution of Francophone or Francophile young people in their communities.

Who is eligible?

Francophone or Francophile
Nominees must be residents or former residents of Ontario who have, within the last few years, carried out initiatives that have benefited the Francophone community. No elected federal, provincial or municipal representative may be nominated while in office. Government employees are eligible to be nominated only for achievements outside of their normal public service related functions.

Young Francophone or Francophile
Candidates must be under 25 years of age, reside or have resided in Ontario and have, in recent years, contributed to many initiatives that benefit the community of Ontario.

How will recipients be selected?
An independent selection committee, appointed by the Minister Responsible for Francophone Affairs, will consider all nominations and select the recipients. One member of the selection panel, under 25 years of age and active in his/her community, will represent Ontario youth.

When will the next awards be presented?
The awards will be presented at a special ceremony hosted by the Government of Ontario in March 2010, during Francophonie Week.

When is the deadline for nominations?
Any person or organization can nominate an individual Francophone or Francophile by completing the following nomination form and sending it, with supporting documents, to the address below no later than 5:00 p.m. on January 18, 2010.

Please note that applications from previous editions can be re-submitted. However, a new nomination file must be completed and sent to the Office of Francophone Affairs within the required time frame.

Materials required to support your submission.

The following documents must be included with your submission, before the nomination can be accepted:

1. A description of the nominee's contributions to the Francophone community of Ontario.

a. Briefly describe the contributions (150 – 250 words)

b. Describe the impact on the Francophone community or on the French language and culture

c. Describe how long you have known the nominee, and

d. Describe when the contributions took place.

2. Between 2 and 5 testimonial letters from individuals who can attest to the value of the nominee's contributions and their impact on the Francophone community of Ontario or on the French language and culture.

3. (Optional) Additional material may be included to support this nomination, such as publications, media stories, etc.

Please list and label all materials enclosed to support this nomination. Do not send videos or audio tapes. Do not send originals of important or official documents as they will not be returned. Submit all materials, unbound and in 8-1/2" x 11" format. Please do not send your application by fax.
